The Horn of Africa experiences four distinct seasons throughout the year, but these seasons are that are quite different from those in North America and most of the West. The seasons are identified by the rainfall, or lack of, that is produced during that time. The first season of the year is the Dry Season, known as Jilal (January – March); followed by the heavy rain season, Gu’ (April – June). Thereafter, come two light rain seasons, known as Hagaa (July – September) and Deyr (October – December).

With the lack of rain during this year’s Gu’ season and an abnormally dry Deyr season in 2018, the people of Somalia and other parts of the Horn of Africa are once again on the verge of a humanitarian disaster due to drought and famine. With these dry conditions comes the prospect of loss of agriculture, loss of livestock, increased susceptibility to disease and severe levels of food insecurity.
