Over 470,000 Lives Hang In The Balance In Karamoja
Uganda is experiencing one of the most devastating climate-driven emergencies in recent history. In the Karamoja region of northeastern Uganda, a severe, prolonged dry spell and acute water scarcity have disrupted local food production, wiped out livestock, and plunged hundreds of thousands of vulnerable mothers, elders, and young children into acute food insecurity.
The Human Toll: A Region At The Breaking Point
The scale of human suffering continues to escalate rapidly:
- 470,000+ local residents face severe, acute food insecurity across the sub-region
- 45% of the local population in hard-hit districts like Kaabong and Kotido are currently suffering from critical levels of hunger
- 122,000+ children are acutely malnourished and urgently require therapeutic feeding and nutritional intervention
- Months without adequate rainfall have depleted community water sources, resulting in widespread livestock losses and severe food shortages
