What is Aqeeqah?

When a child is born, it is part of the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (saw) to perform an Aqeeqah. It is a way to express your gratitude to Allah Wswt) for the blessing of your blessed baby, through the sacrifice of livestock, such as goats or sheep. It usually takes place on the seventh day after a baby’s birth. However, there’s nothing wrong with doing it at a later time. The Prophet Muhammad (saw) himself used to perform Aqeeqah after the birth of a newborn to protect the baby and give thanks. Traditionally, the Sunnah of the Prophet (saw) is that one animal is sacrificed upon the birth of a baby girl and two animals are sacrificed for the birth of a baby boy. The Prophet Muhammad (saw) provided an Aqeeqah to each of his two grandsons, Imam al-Hasan and Imam al-Husain.

Aisha (RA) narrated that the Prophet (saw) said:

“Slaughter two comparable sheep for a male newborn and one sheep for a female.”
