Drought Emergency In The Horn Of Africa
The Horn of Africa is facing a critical humanitarian emergency. As the year draws to a close, the region is bracing for a severe drought exacerbated by the La Niña climate pattern.
This dry spell, coupled with existing water scarcity, threatens to push communities across the region to the brink.
Drought Relief Is Needed Immediately.
Up to one-fifth of the population lacks access to clean, safe water, making them particularly vulnerable to the region’s recurring droughts and floods.
If below-average rainfall continues, the consequences will be devastating. Crop failures, weakened livestock, water shortages, and increased disease outbreaks are all likely outcomes. This, in turn, will lead to heightened food insecurity and malnutrition.
In January 2024, a staggering 58.4 million people were facing severe food insecurity in the region. While famine has been averted in Somalia, thanks to a robust humanitarian response, people are still struggling to survive due to the loss of crops, livestock, and income.
To make matters worse, local water and food prices have reached record highs, putting them out of reach for many.
